'Managing Chronic conditions: helping patients to help themselves' - Free courses for patients and carers

posted 21 Oct 2012, 13:01 by NAS CardiffVale   [ updated 27 Nov 2013, 10:20 ]

Free self management courses for anybody living with a long term health condition, or for anybody who cares for a friend or relative with a long term health condition.

Courses do not concentrate on the condition itself, and we do not give medical advice. Instead, we offer help, advice and support on how to cope with living with a long term health condition or caring situation better on a day-to-day basis.

For further details and dates of the courses, which run from October through to January in both Cardiff and the Vale, see the attached file.

The courses offer advice on the following areas: pain, tiredness, relaxation, depression, stress, better breathing, anxiety, healthy eating, problem solving, exercise, fear and planning.

EPP Cymru offer 3 different types of courses:

The Chronic Disease Self Management Programme (CDSMP)

This is a six-week course, open to anybody who lives with a long term health condition, and the aim of the course is to help people cope with their condition better on a day-to-day basis.

Looking After Me – A Course for Carers (LAM)

This six-week course is very similar to the course above, but is tailored towards people in a caring situation. The aim of this course is to help the carer strike a better balance between caring for their friend/relative, and caring for themselves.

An Introduction to Self Management (ISM)

This course is held over a single morning or afternoon period. The aim of this course, as the title suggests, is to give an introduction to some of the ways in which people can self manage their long term health condition or caring situation.
